Comedian and television host Bill Maher stated that his vote in the 2028 presidential election is "in play" and suggested he could support a Republican candidate if the Democratic Party continues shifting toward radical positions.
Speaking on a Sunday political program, Maher said his presidential choice remains undecided because former President Donald Trump is not expected to be on the ballot, leaving room for alternatives.
Maher argued that the modern Democratic Party has moved too close to the Democratic Socialists of America, citing the group's platform as evidence of a turn toward communism rather than moderate socialism.
He pointed to DSA proposals such as government takeover of key industries, elimination of the Senate, and dismantling traditional law enforcement structures as indicators of extreme ideology.
When asked whether he could vote for Vice President JD Vance, Maher answered affirmatively, conditional on the Democratic Party continuing its current trajectory.
Maher acknowledged that Democrats are likely to perform well in the upcoming midterms as a referendum on Trump, but warned that 2028 presents a different challenge given the rising influence of the party's progressive wing.
The DSA platform, described as "Workers Deserve More," calls for eliminating the U.S. Senate, replacing the president with a congressional appointee, and subordinating the judiciary to Congress.
Additional proposals include universal amnesty for illegal aliens, defunding the Department of Defense, closing overseas military bases, and abolishing what it terms the "carceral forces of the capitalist state."
Analysts note that implementation of such measures would dismantle the constitutional separation of powers that defines the American federal system.
The Democratic Socialists of America has expanded its footprint in electoral politics, with members and allied candidates securing offices at local, state, and federal levels in recent cycles.
