A conservative advocacy group has released a detailed proposal to restructure the United States service academies and war colleges, arguing that the institutions have shifted too far toward civilian academic models and should refocus on a warfighting mission.
The 12‑page blueprint, titled “Restoring Military Education,” outlines reforms across admissions, curriculum, faculty composition, and governance. It calls for eliminating race, ethnicity, and gender considerations in admissions, mandating that at least three‑quarters of coursework center on military competencies, and replacing most civilian instructors with active‑duty or retired officers.
The plan also proposes ending tenure for faculty, removing academy participation in the Rhodes Scholarship program, and dissolving diversity, equity and inclusion offices. Oversight boards would be restructured to prioritize combat readiness over academic diversification.
Recent Pentagon‑directed reviews have already led to changes at the academies. West Point discontinued several cadet clubs focused on identity issues and dropped two elective courses on race and power, while the Naval Academy eliminated courses on gender studies and revised a dozen others.
Proponents argue that executive orders driving these changes are vulnerable to reversal by future administrations, and that statutory legislation is needed to make the reforms permanent.
Critics contend that senior military education must balance tactical proficiency with strategic insight, emphasizing diplomacy, politics, and other instruments of national power. A retired Army officer warned that removing civilian faculty could create a “brain drain” in areas where military officers lack expertise.
The debate reflects broader tensions over the role of higher education within the armed forces, with supporters insisting that the primary purpose of the academies is to produce combat‑ready officers, while opponents caution that strategic leadership requires a broader intellectual foundation.
