Authorities are investigating a possible link between Taco Bell and a nationwide parasite outbreak that has sickened thousands in the US. The probe comes after several Taco Bell locations in Michigan temporarily removed certain ingredients, including lettuce, coriander, and guacamole, due to a recall.
The parasite, Cyclospora, causes symptoms such as watery diarrhea, severe bowel movements, stomach cramps, and fatigue. According to reports, there have been 843 cases across 31 states since May, with 86 people hospitalized. The actual number of infections is expected to be much higher.
The outbreak is not believed to be confined to Taco Bell, and officials stress that no specific product or supplier has been identified as the source. However, Michigan health officials have noted that lettuce is a common product that has come up during the investigation. As a precaution, people are advised to buy whole heads of lettuce instead of pre-packaged salad.

In Michigan, there have been 3,309 cases reported, a significant increase from the typical 50 cases per year. Other states, including Illinois, Virginia, Ohio, and New York, have also seen an uptick in cases. Health officials are urging people to take steps to protect themselves and their families.
Most healthy individuals are expected to recover from the illness without treatment, although it can be prolonged and last several days or even more than a month. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the source of the outbreak and prevent further cases.
