A video of Representative Haley Stevens delivering an unusual campaign speech has drawn widespread attention online. The Michigan Democrat, currently running for the state’s open Senate seat, told supporters she would bring “a little bit of enthusiasm, a little bit of energy and a little bit of stick-it-to-them” as part of what she called the Michigan way.
The clip quickly circulated and invited ridicule across social platforms. It is not the first time Stevens has drawn notice for an unconventional public appearance.
In March 2020, Stevens addressed the House floor while wearing pink latex gloves during remarks on the coronavirus pandemic. She requested additional time to speak and continued as the presiding officer repeatedly gaveled for order.
“I rise for every American who is scared right now,” Stevens said, raising her voice as she pointed to the gloves. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer eventually yielded her an extra 30 seconds to continue.
She used the time to address doctors and nurses, stating, “Our country loves you — to our doctors and our nurses, I wear these latex gloves to tell every American to not be afraid.” The presiding officer again declared her time expired and said she was out of order.
The renewed attention comes three weeks before Michigan’s Senate primaries. Stevens will face Democratic challenger Abdul El-Sayed in the contest.
The primary has drawn national scrutiny as a contrast in party direction. El-Sayed has pushed the Democratic Party further left on health care and foreign policy, while Stevens is viewed as an establishment figure.
Stevens has received backing from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. The race sharpened earlier this month when a third candidate, Mallory McMorrow, withdrew, removing a more moderate option from the field.
