A wave of investigations has begun in British Columbia following the controversial culling of hundreds of ostriches. Authorities are examining two distinct incidents that may be linked to the devastating loss of the birds at Universal Ostrich Farms.
Police are currently investigating an act of vandalism at a Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) office in Kelowna. Disturbing images reveal an expletive scrawled across the building’s facade, reportedly using fecal matter – a stark expression of outrage.
The CFIA ordered the cull of approximately 300 ostriches in Edgewood late last week, concluding months of legal battles waged by the farm owners. The action stemmed from an avian flu infection detected within the flock, despite desperate attempts to prevent the mass killing.
Adding another layer to the unfolding situation, police are also scrutinizing aerial footage of the ostrich farm. A no-fly zone, enforced by Transport Canada, was established to restrict drones and aircraft from the property.
The footage, initially published, depicts the grim aftermath of the cull – the bodies of the ostriches visible within a hay enclosure. Investigators are working to determine if any regulations were violated with the unauthorized flight.
Authorities have confirmed an investigation is underway regarding the drone footage, but have released no further details at this time. Similarly, information surrounding the vandalism at the CFIA office remains limited.
Despite the devastating outcome, the farm’s spokesperson released a defiant message, vowing to continue the fight against the federal agency. She declared the cull “is not the end,” promising to amplify the voices of the animals.
While the specifics of the farm’s next move remain undisclosed, the spokesperson emphasized this is merely the beginning of a larger struggle. She expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the public, urging unity and strength.
The farm is positioning itself as a focal point for change, determined to challenge the decisions that led to this tragic event and prevent similar occurrences in the future. The fight, according to those involved, has only just begun.
