EU Membership: Migration Policy Expert Weighs In

Migration policy remains a top priority for the European Union. One month after the bloc's new migration rules, known as the Pact on Migration and Asylum, took effect, questions arise about its impact. European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner stated that member states have started implementing the rules, with positive results.

According to Brunner, illegal border crossings into the EU have decreased by 37% in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year. He attributed this decline to the new rules and improved protection of the EU's external borders. This development has led Brunner to suggest that it's time to gradually abolish internal border controls between EU member states.

Brunner's comments come as some EU countries, such as Germany and Austria, continue to enforce internal border controls. He argued that with the EU's external borders better protected and a significant drop in irregular border crossings, such controls are no longer necessary. The proposed abolition of these controls aims to enhance the free movement of people within the EU.

The Entry/Exit System, a new digital procedure for non-EU nationals, has been a topic of discussion. Brunner acknowledged concerns from some member states and critics about its performance but stated that it is generally functioning as expected. However, issues have arisen, particularly for professional truck drivers from Western Balkan countries who require long-term visas to deliver goods within the EU.

To address this issue, Brunner proposed that EU member states and Western Balkan countries negotiate long-term visas bilaterally. This approach aims to facilitate the movement of goods and services while ensuring the integrity of the EU's migration policies. The proposed solution seeks to balance the needs of truck drivers with the EU's security and migration concerns.
