A surge of 350 National Guard troops is heading to New Orleans, a deployment timed to coincide with the vibrant, yet increasingly troubled, Mardi Gras season. The move comes as city officials grapple with persistently high crime rates and a growing sense of unease among residents and visitors alike.
These soldiers won’t be operating independently. They will work directly alongside federal agencies – the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security – focusing on enforcing federal law and bolstering efforts to combat violent crime not just in New Orleans, but across Louisiana’s major metropolitan areas.
The mission, operating under the direct command of Governor Landry, is framed as a vital step in enhancing public safety and reinforcing the Department of Defense’s commitment to interagency cooperation. The presence of the Guard is intended to be a visible deterrent and a source of reassurance for a city bracing for large crowds and potential unrest.
The deployment is scheduled to last through February 28th, encompassing critical events like New Year’s Eve in the French Quarter, the Sugar Bowl, and the culmination of Mardi Gras celebrations. Security will be significantly increased during these periods, aiming to prevent incidents and maintain order.
Governor Landry has publicly emphasized the National Guard’s effectiveness in urban safety, drawing parallels to their recent support in Washington, D.C. He highlighted Louisiana’s swift response to a previous federal request for assistance, suggesting a proven track record of successful collaboration.
Many of the troops arriving in New Orleans are veterans of the Washington, D.C. deployment, already experienced in supporting law enforcement operations. Major General Friloux, the adjutant general of Louisiana, affirmed their readiness and extensive training, emphasizing their commitment to protecting their home state.
This isn’t the first time the National Guard has been mobilized to assist New Orleans this year. Previous deployments have already occurred, demonstrating a proactive approach to addressing the city’s ongoing security challenges. The decision follows a concerning trend of violent crime in the city. As of November 1st, New Orleans had already recorded 97 murders, fueling anxieties and prompting calls for increased intervention. In early 2025, a horrific incident saw a driver displaying the flag of the Islamic State group deliberately crash into New Year’s revelers, resulting in casualties and a city shaken by fear.
