The music world is reeling from the loss of Perry Bamonte, the guitarist and keyboardist who wove himself into the very fabric of The Cure’s sound, at the age of 65. He passed away peacefully at his home over the Christmas holiday, following a brief illness, leaving a void that echoes through decades of iconic music.
The Cure remembered Bamonte not just as a musician, but as a deeply integral part of their creative soul. They described him as a quiet force, intensely intuitive, and consistently creative – a warm-hearted presence who was, quite simply, vital to their story.
Bamonte’s journey with the band began humbly in 1984, far from the stage lights. He started as a roadie and guitar tech, immersing himself in the inner workings of the group for five years, a period of dedicated learning and quiet observation.
By 1990, he’d earned his place as a full-fledged member, stepping into the role of keyboardist following Roger O’Donnell’s departure. This marked the beginning of a prolific period, where his talents blossomed across multiple instruments – guitar, six-string bass, and keyboards – shaping the sound of landmark albums.
His fingerprints are all over some of The Cure’s most beloved work, including the haunting melodies of “Wish” (1992), the expansive moods of “Wild Mood Swings” (1996), the introspective depths of “Bloodflowers” (2000), and the band’s self-titled 2004 release.
For fourteen years, Bamonte graced over 400 stages with The Cure, a testament to his dedication and captivating stage presence. Though his time with the core lineup paused in 2005, the connection remained unbroken.
A remarkable chapter unfolded in 2022 when Bamonte triumphantly rejoined The Cure for a series of 90 electrifying performances. It was a reunion that thrilled fans and reaffirmed the enduring bond between him and the band.
His final performance, a poignant moment now etched in memory, took place on November 1, 2024, at London’s Troxy venue. It was the launch of their latest album, “Songs of a Lost World,” and he also appeared in the accompanying film, “The Cure: The Show of a Lost World.”
Long before his passing, Bamonte’s contribution to music history was formally recognized. In 2019, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame alongside his Cure bandmates, a fitting tribute to a career defined by artistry and unwavering commitment.
The band has expressed their deepest condolences to his family, acknowledging the profound loss felt by all who knew and loved him. Perry Bamonte’s music, his spirit, and his legacy will undoubtedly endure, resonating with generations to come.
