The ocean off Singer Island witnessed a breathtaking, terrifying spectacle Friday morning. A 52-year-old man plummeted 500 feet from the sky in his powered paraglider, crashing into the waves just before noon.
Bystanders on the beach instinctively reached for their phones, capturing the dramatic descent on video. The paraglider, having launched from Ocean Cay Park in Jupiter, had been sailing south when a sudden, powerful wind gust sent him into a chaotic spiral.
Lifeguard Sarah Williamson first noticed something was wrong when the paraglider began flying in an “interesting pattern.” Her immediate reaction was to spring into action, alerting her partner and preparing for a swift water rescue.
Without hesitation, Williamson and her colleague grabbed rescue equipment and paddled towards the downed pilot. Beachgoers joined the effort, swimming alongside the lifeguards, all focused on reaching the man as quickly as possible.
