A Phoenix man, now accused of murder, had a prior encounter with the legal system involving a weapon. Deondre Stephon Franklin, 25, faced charges in 2020 for carrying a deadly weapon as a minor, alongside an alcohol-related offense, according to court documents.
That earlier case, however, didn’t end in a conviction. Prosecutors dismissed the charges after Franklin fulfilled court-ordered requirements, including substance evaluations and educational programs. It appeared to be a second chance, a path toward avoiding further legal trouble.
But on January 16th, a routine morning stop at a QuikTrip gas station turned tragically violent. Danny Lyn Kaster, 52, was fatally shot, shattering the quiet of an ordinary day.
Police responded to reports of gunfire around 7:45 a.m., finding Kaster with at least one gunshot wound. Despite swift medical attention, transporting him to a hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. A homicide investigation was immediately launched.
Detectives quickly identified Franklin as the suspect. Within 24 hours, he was arrested and booked on a single count of murder, currently held on a $1 million bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for January 23rd.
The motive behind the shooting remains shrouded in mystery. Authorities have released no information about whether Kaster and Franklin knew each other, leaving investigators to piece together the events leading up to the fatal encounter.

“He was killed in the most ordinary interaction,” Kaster’s family shared, emphasizing the randomness of the tragedy. “It could have been anyone.” The family is now focused on preserving Kaster’s memory, wanting the world to know him as more than just a victim.
