Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez Withdraws from Race

In a surprising development, Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez withdrew from the August 11 Democratic gubernatorial primary after weeks of scrutiny over campaign finance irregularities.

A review of her January finance report uncovered more than $100,000 in duplicate contributions, with some donors listed twice for the same amount on the same day. Additional analyses identified over $275,000 in duplicate donations in December alone.

The report was filed after the deadline, at 2:13 a.m. on January 16, and was amended twice in the early morning hours. Rodriguez had claimed the campaign had approximately $1.5 million in funds, but the errors revealed only about $200,000 in cash on hand.

Following the revelations, Rodriguez held a press conference on Monday, labeling the issue a “bump in the road” and announcing the dismissal of longtime campaign manager Kara Spencer. She also indicated that the campaign would file amended reports with the Wisconsin Ethics Commission.

In a formal statement, Rodriguez expressed gratitude to supporters and explained that the ongoing financial controversy would distract from the primary and the general election. She emphasized her commitment to Wisconsin's interests and stated that she could not, in good conscience, allow the questions to cloud an election she believed was critical for the state.

The withdrawal underscores the importance of fiscal transparency in statewide campaigns. It also highlights the broader political context, as voters seek leadership capable of countering legislative priorities favoring corporate interests over public services.

Rodriguez encouraged her supporters to continue their efforts and assured that the state’s resilience would carry the movement forward. The resignation marks a significant shift in the Democratic field and raises questions about the future direction of the gubernatorial race.
