A winter storm concealed a tragedy in Maine on Sunday evening. A private jet, bound for Paris, violently flipped and burst into flames moments after taking off from Bangor International Airport, claiming the lives of all six people on board.
Among the victims was Nick Mastrascusa, a celebrated Hawaiian chef and a pillar of his community. He was known not just for his culinary artistry, but as a devoted father, coach, and friend – a loss deeply felt by those who knew him.
Mastrascusa leaves behind his partner, Natalia, and three children, navigating the heartbreak of his sudden absence. He was the Executive Vice President of Hospitality for a luxury travel company, bringing decades of experience from renowned hotels and resorts to his role.
His culinary journey began with rigorous training at Johnson & Wales University and the Culinary Institute of America. He most recently captivated diners as the Executive Chef and Director of Food & Beverage at Kūkiʻo Golf and Beach Club in Hawaiʻi, crafting a dining experience defined by elegance and local flavor.
Also on board was Tara Arnold, an attorney with a prominent personal injury law firm, and her husband, Kurt Arnold, is a founding partner. The firm owned the Bombardier Challenger 600 jet.
The pilot, Jacob Hosmer, 47, was also tragically lost in the crash, confirmed by his father. Another victim has been identified as Shawna Collins.
The FAA is currently investigating the “unknown circumstances” surrounding the departure. Witnesses reported the aircraft was “upside down” shortly after leaving the runway, as emergency crews raced to the scene.
Despite the challenging winter conditions brought by Winter Storm Fern, the plane had undergone standard de-icing procedures and followed other jets that departed safely. Visibility was reportedly limited, and one preceding aircraft opted to remain grounded.
The National Transportation Safety Board has been notified and will lead a comprehensive investigation into the cause of this devastating crash, seeking answers amidst the grief and shock.
