Former president George W Bush’s trans cousin has spoken about life as a queer member of such a prominent family.
Bush’s nibling – a gender-neutral term referring to a child of a sibling, used instead of “niece” or “nephew” – appeared on the improvised stand-up show Crowd Control, where the audience is the material.
During the episode, which is available to watch on Dropout, comedian Joyelle Nicole Johnson spoke to audience member Jessi Kat Scott, who was wearing a shirt that proclaimed ‘This Bush Loves Bush’.
“You could afford three-and-a-half ounces of weed in college,” Johnson joked, to which Scott replied: “I’m a trans member of the Bush family, so I don’t got that kind of money anymore.”
They went on to say that former president George H W Bush, who was in the White House between 1989 and 1983, was their great-uncle, making 43rd president George W Bush, who served two terms from 2001, a second cousin, or “a cousin-uncle”.
‘Bringing the bushes back to the Bush family’
When Johnson said a “cuncle”, Scott called themself a nibling.
“It’s hard to date,” Scott went on to say, “because bringing someone back, bringing [a] queer person to Thanksgiving, your creepy uncle is, like W.”
Johnson jumped in and said: “Bringing the bushes back to the Bush family.”

The Crowd Control team captioned a TikTok post sharing the moment: “The only Bush family who has earned our respect (sorry Jeb).”
One person responded to the post, by saying: “This Bush for president, three for three,” while someone else said: “Imagine trying to convince a queer person to have ties to the Bushes. Mountain of pity for this beautiful person’s dating life.”
Another online comedian went with: “For alliteration purposes, they should bring home a butch with a bush to the Bushes.”
In 2020, singer and actress Jennifer Lopez revealed a short film about her nibling coming out as transgender and non-binary to the family.
