A fierce battle of words has erupted between the federal government and New Jersey’s governor after she announced a plan to allow citizens to actively monitor and report the movements of federal immigration officers.
Governor Sherrill, a Navy veteran, declared her intention to create an online portal for the public to upload videos and information regarding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity, stating, “If you see an ICE agent in the street, get your phone out, we want to know.”
Federal officials responded swiftly and forcefully, labeling the governor’s initiative as potential obstruction of justice. They argued that it actively encourages violence against law enforcement and hinders critical operations.
The Department of Homeland Security highlighted a dramatic surge in assaults against ICE officers – a staggering increase of over 1,300% – claiming the governor’s actions exacerbate an already dangerous environment.
Officials contend that increased state and local cooperation would significantly reduce the need for ICE presence in New Jersey, suggesting the governor’s policies ultimately endanger her constituents. They assert that a lack of collaboration forces federal agents to operate in situations where public safety is compromised.
To underscore their point, federal authorities cited recent ICE arrests in New Jersey involving individuals accused of horrific crimes, including sex offenses against children, rape, and murder. They painted a stark contrast between protecting communities and obstructing the apprehension of dangerous criminals.
One recent arrest involved a Mexican national with a prior conviction for a sex offense against a child. Another involved an Ecuadorian national convicted of endangering a child’s welfare through sexual contact. A Cuban national arrested by ICE faces homicide charges.
The list of those apprehended also included individuals accused of making terroristic threats and committing rape and assault, further fueling the argument that ICE’s work is vital to public safety.

Sherrill pointed to past incidents, including the deaths of two individuals during encounters with ICE agents, alleging unacceptable conduct and a lack of transparency from the agency. The White House also weighed in, firmly backing ICE and its officers. A spokesperson criticized the governor, suggesting her focus should be on tracking down criminals, not federal law enforcement.
