Ambassador Rodrigo Malmierca Diaz painted a picture of deliberate hardship, accusing the U.S. of orchestrating a crippling oil blockade designed to destabilize the island nation.
He described the U.S. actions not as a disagreement with Cuba’s political system, but as a calculated effort to inflict suffering on an entire population. This “collective punishment,” he argued, is an unjustifiable crime, a deliberate attempt to choke the life out of a sovereign nation.
The ambassador revealed reports of American vessels shadowing oil ships bound for Cuba, effectively exercising control over vital supply lines. This interference, he explained, isn’t simply about politics; it’s about creating a devastating humanitarian crisis.
The consequences are already dire, according to Malmierca Diaz. Thousands of kidney dialysis patients are going without critical care, and essential food supplies are failing to reach those who need them most. The lack of energy, he emphasized, permeates every facet of Cuban life, crippling healthcare, transportation, and education.
The intent, he stated plainly, is to force a regime change through manufactured desperation. Officials within the previous U.S. administration reportedly believed the blockade could bring the communist government to its knees.
However, a senior Global Affairs Canada official offered a contrasting assessment. Despite the fuel shortages imposed by U.S. measures, the Cuban government appears remarkably stable. The official noted Cuba’s diversified economy and societal structures, suggesting no immediate signs of collapse.
The crisis has prompted calls for international assistance. Mexico has already dispatched shipments of food and medicine, and within Canada, both the Bloc Quebecois and NDP are urging Ottawa to follow suit. The Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister has indicated an aid announcement is forthcoming, though details remain scarce.
Cuba’s vulnerability stems from its heavy reliance on imported fuel, producing only 40% of its needs. The disruption of shipments from Venezuela, coupled with Mexico’s subsequent halt after threats of U.S. tariffs, has created a critical shortage. This has even led to the cancellation of flights by airlines like Air Canada due to a lack of aviation fuel.
