Heroic Father-of-Two Dives to Rescue Drowning Child in North Sea

A dramatic rescue mission unfolded on the North Sea coast, with one man paying the ultimate price to save two children. Davey Short, a father-of-seven from Hartlepool, has spoken about the harrowing moment he saved a little boy's life, as two other men tragically drowned.

Short recalled seeing the child swimming with a man who appeared to be face down in the water. "The mother was on the shoreline yelling," he said. "Her two sons had gone in to play in the sea and got swept out. Their dad had gone in after them." Without hesitation, Short sprinted into the water, ignoring police instructions to stay out.

He swam out as hard as he could to reach the little boy, shouting to him to swim towards him. However, the boy was worried about his father, who was unresponsive in the water. Short grabbed the boy's hand and swam back to shore, where they both collapsed. The boy's mother was hysterical, thanking Short, while the child cried out, "My dad, he's dead, isn't he?"

Short's actions were heroic, but devastatingly, one of the drowning men did not survive. The other man, who had gone into the water to rescue the children, was pronounced dead shortly after being brought out. Superintendant Glen Ward of Cleveland Police expressed his condolences to the families of both men, warning of the dangers of open water and urging people to take extra care.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of the Northumberland Coast, with a petition demanding round-the-year lifeguards already attracting over 1,500 signatures. Short has vowed to help the families of the two men who lost their lives, planning to set up a crowdfunder to support them.
