Cebu Pacific announced plans to equip its fleet with satellite-based in‑flight internet using SpaceX’s Starlink system, marking the first deployment of the technology by a low‑cost carrier in Southeast Asia.
The airline intends to install the connectivity solution on a selection of aircraft beginning later this year, with a full rollout targeted for completion within the next 18 months.
Starlink’s low‑earth orbit constellation provides broadband speeds comparable to ground‑based services, enabling passengers to access the internet throughout the duration of a flight, including over remote oceanic routes.
Implementation will involve retrofitting existing cabins with compact antennae and onboard routers, a process the carrier says will not affect seat capacity or cabin layout.
Regulatory approval from aviation authorities has been secured, and the airline expects the service to meet the safety and interference standards required for commercial operations.
By offering high‑speed connectivity, Cebu Pacific aims to enhance the travel experience for its price‑sensitive market while differentiating itself from regional competitors that rely on slower satellite or ground‑based systems.
Industry analysts anticipate that the move could set a new benchmark for budget airlines, prompting broader adoption of satellite internet across the sector.
