Representative Gabe Vasquez, a Democrat seeking re‑election in New Mexico’s 2nd congressional district, has drawn attention with remarks about racial equity in outdoor recreation.
He has argued that outdoor spaces have long been dominated by white males and called for policies that broaden access for people of color.
Vasquez praised national conservation organizations for adopting initiatives that expand opportunities for underrepresented groups, stating that traditionally white spaces will become more diverse and inclusive.
He also criticized conservation groups for a lack of diversity, noting that leadership had been white male and that there was a disconnect with Hispanic communities.
In 2017, Vasquez co‑founded the Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project, an organization aimed at making the outdoors more equitable and advancing environmental justice.
He was first elected to the U.S. House in 2022.
Republican opponents have suggested that his focus on race is out of step with the district’s demographics, which voted for the current president by a narrow margin in 2024.
Vasquez previously voted against a resolution honoring law enforcement that included language criticizing the Defund the Police movement and sanctuary city policies.
He has repeatedly stated that racism is embedded in many aspects of life and has called for reforms that address systemic inequality.
In a 2020 interview, he criticized law enforcement and called for dismantling systems of oppression, including wealth inequality.
During discussions about outdoor recreation, Vasquez highlighted that people of color often face barriers to compensation and recognition in conservation work.
He will face Republican challenger Greg Cunningham, a Marine veteran and retired police officer, in the November general election.
Recent polling indicates a slight lean toward the incumbent, although the race remains competitive.
