Cartel Kingpin "El Mayo" Sentenced to Life in Prison

Cartel Kingpin "El Mayo" Sentenced to Life in Prison

The Sinaloa Cartel co-founder Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada Garcia has been sentenced to life in prison and ordered to forfeit $15 billion in drug trafficking profits.

U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan imposed the sentence, stating that Garcia's role in the cartel's activities justified the mandatory life sentence. The judge noted the "almost unimaginable amount of drugs" and "number of murders" attributed to Garcia, which he believed justified Congress's decision to make the sentence mandatory.

At 76 years old, Garcia agreed to plead guilty to multiple charges, including racketeering conspiracy and continuing criminal enterprise, in August 2025. He was arrested in July 2024 alongside Joaquin Guzman Lopez, one of Guzman's sons, after their plane landed in the U.S.

Garcia took responsibility for the harm he had caused during his sentencing, urging the next generation to choose a different path. He expressed remorse for his actions and acknowledged the damage caused by his involvement in the cartel.

Joseph Nocella, a federal prosecutor, praised the tireless efforts of U.S. and Mexican law enforcement, who worked together to bring Garcia to justice. Nocella stated that the sentence marked the end of a chapter for Garcia and brought some measure of justice to the victims of the Sinaloa Cartel's activities.

Garcia will spend the rest of his life in a U.S. prison, where he will receive adequate medical care for his progressive health ailments. His sentencing comes after his co-defendant, Guzman Lopez, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including drug trafficking and kidnapping.
