Nine aircraft declare emergencies over Gatwick Airport

Multiple flights at London Gatwick Airport declared a general emergency, prompting a coordinated diversion of aircraft to alternative airports across the region.

Airport officials reported that 14 flights were rerouted before Gatwick resumed normal operations at approximately 1:30 a.m., allowing the majority of services to return to the hub.

Airlines including British Airways, TUI, easyJet and Jet2 were among those affected, with hundreds of passengers redirected to Heathrow, Stansted, Luton and Birmingham airports.

A spokesperson for Gatwick emphasized that the number of diverted flights was limited and reaffirmed that safety and security remained the top priority throughout the incident.

One passenger described the disruption as unprecedented, noting that their mobile device received thousands of notifications and expressing a sense of alarm during the event.

Another traveler on a flight from Tenerife was forced to land at Stansted, reporting a significantly longer journey and uncertainty about when the aircraft would be able to return to Gatwick.

The incident caused widespread inconvenience for passengers but was resolved without injury, and normal flight schedules were gradually restored after the airport reopened.
