MISSISSAUGA ATTACKED: Locals FIGHT BACK for Robbery Victim!

The holiday season often brings stories of generosity and goodwill, but also stark reminders of the darkness that exists. For Sabir Syed, a senior citizen running a currency exchange kiosk in Mississauga, this December brought both in a terrifying sequence of events.

On December 13th, Syed’s small business inside Iqbal Foods grocery store was targeted by four masked individuals. Security footage revealed a brazen robbery, with one assailant easily scaling the plexiglass booth. A clumsy fall by another, however, offered a potential clue for investigators – a glimpse into the perpetrators’ inexperience.

Despite the almost comical stumble, the reality of the situation was brutal. The 65-year-old Syed endured a violent beating, requiring immediate medical attention including CT scans. Remarkably, he has since returned to work, bearing the visible mark of the attack – a lingering bruise.

“I am feeling better,” Syed stated, determined to resume his regular hours. Friends are working to enhance security at the kiosk, ensuring he’s less vulnerable in the future. Peel Police are actively investigating, promising to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The financial impact of the robbery was devastating. The thieves made off with $60,000 in cash, a crippling blow to Syed’s livelihood, compounded by the fact that he lacked insurance to cover the loss. It was a cruel blow, threatening to steal his Christmas spirit.

But the story didn’t end with despair. An outpouring of support from the community swiftly emerged. A GoFundMe campaign was launched, and within days, over 511 donors contributed, raising $37,000 towards a $45,000 goal. Even Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish joined the effort with a donation.

Sabir Syed was badly beaten by bandits who robbed his currency exchange kiosk inside Iqbal Foods grocery store in Mississauga on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2025.

This incident laid bare a troubling reality: Mississauga, like many cities, is facing increasing crime. Nearby businesses at Erin Mills Town Centre had been targeted multiple times. Yet, the response to Syed’s plight demonstrated a powerful counterforce – a community that deeply cares for its own.

More than 500 individuals stepped forward, offering financial assistance and restoring a significant portion of what was stolen. It proved that even in a large city, compassion and empathy haven’t been lost, especially when a neighbor is in need during the holidays.

Syed expressed his profound gratitude for the overwhelming support and kind words he received. This isn’t a tale of a Christmas miracle, but rather a story of resilience, a comeback fueled by the generosity of strangers, and a city refusing to let criminals extinguish the spirit of safety and peace.

While the perpetrators may have initially gotten away with their crime, Peel Police are known for their dedication. The hope remains that these modern-day Scrooges will soon face the consequences of their actions, and Syed can fully focus on rebuilding his life.
