The attack, a brutal display of force, claimed one life and injured twenty-seven, unfolding just hours before crucial peace talks were scheduled to begin between Ukraine and the United States.
Explosions reverberated across the capital for hours, a grim symphony of destruction as long-range weaponry targeted the heart of the city. The assault began in the darkness, intensifying as daylight broke, leaving residents scrambling for shelter and bracing for the worst.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, en route to Florida for a pivotal meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, condemned the attacks as a deliberate escalation. He was traveling with a heavy heart, knowing the violence was a direct response to the very negotiations aimed at ending the nearly four-year-old war.
The Russian Defence Ministry claimed a “massive strike” utilizing hypersonic missiles and drones, justifying the attack by alleging Ukrainian strikes on “civilian objects” within Russia. They stated their targets were energy infrastructure and military-industrial enterprises, a claim met with skepticism as the true cost of the attack became clear.
Ukraine’s air force reported intercepting 519 drones and 40 missiles, but the damage was extensive. Zelenskyy revealed the primary targets were energy and civilian infrastructure, leaving entire districts without power or heat. He stated plainly: “Today Russia demonstrated how it responds to peace talks.”

Two children were among the wounded, and one body was recovered from the wreckage of a destroyed building. Officials described the attack as a deliberate attempt to “raise the stakes” in the war, a chilling message sent with each explosion.
