The initial alarm was raised by independent journalist Nick Shirley, whose investigation in Minnesota uncovered a network of Somali-run daycare centers allegedly involved in large-scale fraud. His reporting included shocking footage of a facility claiming to care for over one hundred children, yet appearing utterly deserted when investigators arrived – the staff quickly shutting the door to avoid further scrutiny.
Now, similar red flags are appearing in Washington State. Researcher Kristen Mag discovered a startling anomaly while examining a state government database: hundreds of childcare centers identifying Somali as their primary language are operating without listing a physical address.
Mag’s findings are deeply unsettling. Out of a total of 5,046 childcare centers participating in the state’s Early Achievers program – a requirement for receiving state subsidies and grants – a significant 539 list Somali as their primary language. The vast majority of these lack a verifiable street address, concentrated primarily in the Seattle-Tacoma area and across Western Washington.
The absence of physical addresses raises immediate questions about the legitimacy of these centers and their eligibility for state funding. While the extent of potential fraud remains unconfirmed, Mag expresses a strong suspicion that a substantial number are submitting fraudulent claims for grants and subsidies.
