Virginia’s incoming governor, Abigail Spanberger, has chosen Dr. Sesha Joi Moon to lead the state’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. The appointment signals a clear direction for the new administration as it prepares to take office on January 17th.

Dr. Moon brings a diverse background to the role, with experience spanning government, education, and the nonprofit sector. Spanberger emphasized Moon’s unique insight into building a stronger and more inclusive Virginia for all families.

Most recently, Dr. Moon served as chief impact officer for the Girl Scouts of the USA. Prior to that, she operated a consulting practice, Moon & Associates, where she notably worked as the “chief brand strategist” for Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett.

Dr. Moon identifies as a Black queer woman and has been a vocal advocate for DEI initiatives. She recently stated that despite challenges, she believes the work of diversity, equity, and inclusion is only just beginning to gain momentum.

Her commitment to the field extends beyond consulting. Dr. Moon previously held a position as executive-in-residence with Stacey Abrams’ American Pride Rises Network, a DEI advocacy organization.

Notably, Dr. Moon also served as the chief diversity officer for the U.S. House of Representatives during a period of shifting leadership. She worked under Speakers Nancy Pelosi, Kevin McCarthy, and Mike Johnson, navigating a complex political landscape.

Spanberger’s victory in November, securing over 10 percentage points more votes than her Republican opponent, marked a significant shift in Virginia’s political landscape. The win returns the governor’s mansion to Democratic control after a four-year period under Republican leadership.

Dr. Moon expressed her eagerness to join Spanberger’s administration, focusing on expanding opportunities for all Virginians, particularly those in underserved communities. She envisions a future where every resident has the chance to reach their full potential.

In a recent podcast appearance, Dr. Moon directly addressed critics of DEI work, asserting that efforts to dismantle such programs will not halt the progress being made. She conveyed a sense of optimism and determination within the field.

The appointment of Dr. Moon underscores Spanberger’s commitment to prioritizing diversity and inclusion as central tenets of her governorship. It sets the stage for a new era in Virginia, focused on equitable opportunities for all its citizens.
