The appointment of Liam Rosenior as Chelsea’s new head coach has stirred debate, with football legend Paul Scholes openly questioning the decision. While Rosenior secured a six-year deal, Scholes believes the club overlooked a potentially superior candidate – Cesc Fabregas.
Chelsea’s search for a new leader began after Enzo Maresca’s departure on New Year’s Day. Maresca, despite a Club World Cup and Conference League victory, saw his tenure marred by a December slump, with the team winning only two of their last nine matches. A growing disconnect between the manager and the club’s hierarchy further fueled the change.
Rosenior’s connection to Chelsea’s ownership, who also control Strasbourg, undoubtedly played a role in his swift rise to the forefront. The club statement highlighted his ability to quickly galvanize the squad, yet Scholes remains unconvinced.
Fabregas, a two-time Premier League champion with Chelsea, had been tentatively linked with the position. Though his managerial experience mirrors Rosenior’s, his recent success at Italian side Como has marked him as a manager with immense potential. Scholes clearly sees that potential as exceeding Rosenior’s.
“Not for United,” Scholes stated on a recent podcast, dismissing Fabregas for the Manchester United role. “But, you know what? I actually like what he’s doing and think he might have been a better choice for Chelsea than Liam Rosenior.”
Chelsea’s immediate future rests with interim coach Calum McFarlane, who oversaw a 1-1 draw against Manchester City following Maresca’s exit. McFarlane will again lead the team against Fulham before Rosenior officially takes the reins.
Rosenior himself expressed profound humility and honor at being appointed. He spoke of protecting Chelsea’s winning identity and building a team that embodies the club’s values, emphasizing teamwork, unity, and a relentless pursuit of trophies.
“My job is to protect that identity and create a team that reflects these values in every game we play as we continue winning trophies,” Rosenior declared. He envisions a strong connection between players, staff, and fans, driven by a shared hunger for success.
He passionately articulated his commitment to fostering an environment where everyone feels united and driven by the same goal, promising to dedicate himself fully to bringing the success Chelsea’s supporters deserve. He understands the fans are the heart of the club and wants to make them proud.
