Police chief touts gun link in Ohio dentist murders; records show three 9 mm casings found in killings

A chilling discovery has emerged in the investigation surrounding the deaths of Ohio dentist Spencer Tepe and his wife, Monique. Investigators have preliminarily linked a firearm recovered from the home of Monique’s ex-husband, Michael McKee, to the fatal shootings.

Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant confirmed the connection, but remained guarded about specifics. She declined to detail how the weapon was identified or whether it had been legally purchased, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

The investigation began after officers responded to a welfare check at the Tepe residence on December 30th, discovering both victims dead from gunshot wounds. The deaths were swiftly ruled homicides, launching a focused pursuit of those responsible.

Evidence collected at the scene included three spent 9mm shell casings, meticulously logged and submitted for analysis. These casings are now undergoing comparison through the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN), a crucial step in determining if they match the linked firearm.

Authorities quickly zeroed in on McKee, a vascular surgeon from Chicago, as a prime suspect. Investigators determined he had left Ohio following the murders, leading to his arrest in Rockford, Illinois.

The break in the case came through the identification of a vehicle seen arriving near the Tepe home shortly before the shootings and departing immediately afterward. This vehicle was later traced back to McKee, providing a critical link to the crime scene.

While police have identified McKee as the suspect, the motive behind the tragic killings remains unclear. Chief Bryant acknowledged the case appears to be domestic violence-related, but stressed that further investigation is needed to establish a definitive reason.

McKee is now facing upgraded charges of premeditated aggravated murder in Ohio. Authorities continue to appeal to the public for any information, no matter how small, that could aid in understanding the events leading up to this devastating crime.

The investigation has been a relentless effort, with Bryant emphasizing the dedication of her team to both this case and others, ensuring all grieving families receive the full extent of their commitment to justice.
