Though a shelter-in-place order for embassy staff has been lifted, the situation remains volatile, marked by coordinated attacks on police forces across multiple districts.
The unrest stems from a dramatic escalation of gang activity following coordinated prison riots where inmates seized control of three correctional facilities. These uprisings have plunged the nation into a state of emergency, with President Bernardo Arévalo declaring a national crisis after prisoners took 43 guards hostage, resulting in the tragic deaths of ten officers.
Authorities have identified notorious criminal organizations – Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) – as being central to the chaos. Both gangs are designated as terrorist organizations by both Guatemala and the United States, highlighting the severity of the threat they pose to regional stability.
