Crockett’s proposed legislation, aptly named the TRACK ICE Act, aims to dismantle the secrecy surrounding deportation operations. The bill, co-sponsored by Representative Dan Goldman of New York, seeks to mandate comprehensive transparency regarding flights used for detention and deportation.
For years, concerns have mounted over the lack of visibility into these flights – often referred to as “ghost flights.” Critics argue this opacity allows immigration agencies to operate with unchecked power, inflicting profound hardship on families and individuals caught in the system.
“For far too long, the federal government has operated immigration flights without full transparency,” Crockett stated. “These flights are tearing families apart, leaving loved ones in the dark, and giving immigration agencies free rein to act without oversight.”
The impetus for this legislation is also rooted in recent, tragic events. The fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis by an ICE agent ignited fierce protests and fueled accusations of reckless behavior, prompting calls for a thorough investigation.
The TRACK ICE Act would require the public disclosure of crucial flight details within 72 hours of each operation. This includes aircraft identification, departure and arrival times, and mission designations, offering an unprecedented level of scrutiny.
Beyond flight specifics, the bill demands information about those being detained and deported. Details such as nationality, age, sex, and family status would be made public, aiming to humanize the individuals impacted by these policies.
While proponents champion the bill as a vital step towards accountability, concerns have been raised about potential risks to agents and ongoing investigations. Opponents suggest excessive disclosure could compromise operational security.
