TORONTO'S NEW TRAIN IS HERE: Prepare for Liftoff Feb 8!

After years of anticipation and frustrating delays, the Eglinton Crosstown LRT is poised to finally open its doors on February 8th. The announcement, unexpectedly revealed by Premier Doug Ford, signals a potential end to a long and troubled journey for the ambitious transit project.

Ford’s relief was palpable, describing the project as a “nightmare” for everyone involved. Hundreds of thousands of kilometers of testing have been completed, and the premier expressed his happiness that the line is nearing completion, promising an “incredible” addition to Toronto’s transit network.

The 19-kilometer line, stretching from Mount Dennis to Kennedy Station, has faced a relentless series of obstacles since construction began in 2011. It’s a project that has outlasted political leaders – witnessing the tenures of multiple premiers, mayors, and even prime ministers.

Originally slated for a 2020 opening, the LRT has been plagued by setbacks, including improperly laid tracks and a concerning train collision during testing. Repeatedly dashed hopes for a launch date have left residents and commuters increasingly skeptical.

Recent concerns, voiced by Councillor Josh Matlow, centered on ongoing issues with the signal system and unacceptably slow speeds on surface sections of the line. He argued that rapid transit must, by definition, be faster than existing bus routes.

The nearly $13-billion project’s troubled history has fueled calls for a thorough public inquiry. Many believe Torontonians deserve a full accounting of the years of delays and significant cost overruns that have defined the Eglinton Crosstown’s development.

While official details regarding the full opening are expected in the coming days, the February 8th target represents a crucial turning point. It offers a glimmer of hope that this long-awaited transit line will finally deliver on its promise to connect communities and ease congestion across the city.

The completion of the Eglinton Crosstown is more than just a transportation upgrade; it’s a testament to the enduring challenges of large-scale infrastructure projects and the importance of accountability in public spending.
