Seven members of a single family were shot, resulting in five deaths, in a targeted mass shooting in East St. Louis on Sunday. Officials described the attack as a deliberate and coordinated assault.
Two 16‑year‑old suspects were taken into custody, but no charges have yet been filed against them.
Shootings took place at multiple sites, including 39th and Summit, the Gompers public housing project, and Jones Park. Five people died and two others were hospitalized with serious injuries.
Police emphasized that the violence is terrible and evil, but that it will not bring the city down.
Officials confirmed that there is no known threat to the public.
