A U.S. service member was killed on July 18 in northern Iraq while conducting a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance recovered from a downed Iranian one‑way attack drone.
A second service member was wounded in the same operation and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The incident follows an Iranian strike on a U.S. base in Jordan that killed two service members and injured four others, who were later evacuated to Jordanian hospitals and have since been discharged.
During the search for a service member missing in Jordan after that attack, unidentified remains were discovered on Sunday. The remains are now undergoing forensic examination to determine identity.
U.S. Central Command has withheld the names of the fallen and missing personnel out of respect for their families during the notification process.
The situation remains fluid, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
