A prominent Democrat is facing criticism after her campaign spent thousands of dollars on luxury hotels. Representative Ilhan Omar, a member of the progressive "Squad," has been accused of hypocrisy for her spending habits, particularly given her vocal criticism of wealth disparity.
A review of Federal Election Commission records found that Omar's campaign dropped over $6,000 on high-end hotels and private transportation between April and June. The payments included stays at a Ritz-Carlton resort in Palm Springs, a hotel with sweeping views of the Hollywood Sign and downtown Los Angeles, and a luxury stay in the heart of Times Square.
The expenses covered a range of costs, including $2,131.90 to W New York in Times Square, $1,613.23 to The Godfrey Hotel Hollywood, $1,143 to Blacklane Transportation, $926.80 to Ace Hotel & Swim Club Palm Springs, and $682.41 to the Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage.

The total travel expenses for the three-month period exceeded $28,000, with food, beverage, and catering expenses topping $23,000. The Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage, one of the hotels used by Omar's campaign, bills itself as a luxury resort overlooking the Coachella Valley and San Jacinto Mountains.
The revelation has sparked accusations of hypocrisy, particularly given Omar's vocal criticism of wealth disparity and her association with progressive Democrats like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Some have questioned whether Omar's spending habits align with her public stance on wealth and inequality, with critics labeling her a "champagne socialist."
