The United States launched a third consecutive night of air strikes against Iran on Monday, signaling a resumption of a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump announced that the blockade would recommence and that a 20 percent fee would be imposed on commercial vessels transiting the waterway.
Shortly after the strikes were launched, reports indicated that explosions were heard in Bandar Abbas, a port city on Iran’s southern coast. The incident underscored the heightened volatility in the region.
The president also declared that the strait would remain open for all vessels, regardless of Iranian involvement, following Iran’s claim of responsibility for attacks on U.S. military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait, and strikes in Oman and Jordan.
