A fifteen-year-old girl’s life was irrevocably altered on a May evening in Warwickshire, England, after a seemingly innocent encounter turned into a horrific ordeal. While enjoying time with friends in Leamington, she met two seventeen-year-old boys, Jan Jahanzeb and Israr Niazal, setting in motion a chain of events that would lead to unimaginable trauma.
The two boys initially engaged the girl in conversation, gradually persuading her to accompany them on a walk. This seemingly harmless request masked a sinister intent, as they deliberately led her towards the secluded area of Newbold Comyn park. It was there, away from public view, that they subjected her to a brutal rape.
Demonstrating extraordinary courage in the aftermath of the attack, the teenager managed to signal for help, flagging down a passerby who immediately contacted the police. This swift action initiated a meticulous investigation, spearheaded by Warwickshire police detectives determined to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Investigators meticulously pieced together the events, utilizing CCTV footage and crucially, photographs taken by the victim earlier that day on her phone. These vital pieces of evidence allowed them to swiftly identify and apprehend Jahanzeb and Niazal, bringing them into custody to face questioning.
Both teenagers were formally charged with rape and subsequently appeared before the Coventry youth court, where they entered guilty pleas. The gravity of their actions demanded a higher level of justice, leading to a sentencing hearing at Warwick Crown Court where reporting restrictions were lifted, revealing their identities and their status as Afghan asylum seekers.
The judge, recognizing the severity of the crime, handed down significant sentences: Jahanzeb received ten years and eight months imprisonment, while Niazal was sentenced to nine years and ten months. Both will initially serve their time in a Young Offenders’ Institution before being transferred to adult prison facilities.
Beyond the immediate custodial sentences, both offenders were placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, a permanent marker of their crimes. Indefinite restraining orders were also issued, designed to protect the public and prevent any future harm.
Detective Chief Inspector Richard Hobbs lauded the victim’s bravery in coming forward, acknowledging the immense trauma she endured. He emphasized the dedication of the specially trained officers who provided unwavering support throughout the investigation, ensuring her needs were prioritized.
