A political shift is underway in Wyoming as Secretary of State Chuck Gray announced his candidacy for Congress. This move comes after incumbent Representative Harriett Hageman set her sights on the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Cynthia Lummis, creating an open contest for Wyoming’s House representation.
Gray, a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, framed his decision as a response to both prayerful consideration and direct appeals from Wyoming voters. He intends to champion the state’s unique character and build upon Hageman’s established conservative platform.
In a compelling announcement video, Gray presented himself as a resolute defender of Wyoming values, embodying a “Wyoming tough” and “America first” ethos. He outlined a series of aggressive policy proposals aimed at reshaping the nation’s approach to critical issues.
Central to Gray’s platform is a commitment to aggressively counter China’s growing influence within the United States. He also proposes treating drug smugglers with the severity reserved for terrorists, signaling a hardline stance on border security and criminal justice.
Gray’s vision extends to energy policy, where he vehemently rejects what he terms “woke” initiatives, advocating instead for the full utilization of Wyoming’s energy resources. He also pledged to protect girls’ sports and pursue the deportation of all individuals residing in the country illegally.
As Wyoming’s chief election official since 2022, Gray has been a vocal advocate for election integrity. He spearheaded the implementation of conservative reforms, including proof-of-citizenship requirements for voter registration and restrictions on foreign funding of elections.
These reforms also included a ban on ranked-choice voting and measures designed to limit third-party involvement in election administration, alongside efforts to prevent crossover voting in Republican primaries. Gray consistently emphasizes his commitment to fulfilling campaign promises.
Gray gained national prominence in 2023 by publicly defending former President Trump against attempts to disqualify him from presidential ballots under the 14th Amendment. He actively participated in legal challenges, filing amicus briefs before both the Colorado Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court.
He distinguished himself as the sole Secretary of State to directly support Trump’s eligibility before the nation’s highest court, declaring his unwavering loyalty during a period when many political figures distanced themselves from the former president. Gray positioned himself as a champion of voter sovereignty.
Gray’s campaign highlights numerous national conservative accolades, including recognition from influential organizations like CPAC, the Club for Growth, and Wyoming Right to Life. Internal polling reportedly indicates a strong position against potential primary challengers.
The unfolding contest arrives in the wake of Liz Cheney’s defeat in the 2022 primary, a race where she lost to Hageman after publicly criticizing former President Trump. This sets the stage for another pivotal showdown within Wyoming’s Republican ranks.
Gray intends to champion policies mirroring those of the Trump administration, particularly regarding energy independence and border security. He specifically aims to eliminate “woke wind subsidies” and advance the SAVE Act, a federal version of Wyoming’s proof-of-citizenship voting requirement.
