Tucson shooting injures 9; police shoot suspect after incident

A shooting in downtown Tucson, Arizona, early Sunday morning left nine people injured and the suspected gunman wounded.

Police responded to gunfire near the Screening Room theater on Congress Street around 2 a.m. local time and encountered an adult male suspect.

Officers reported giving the suspect multiple verbal commands before a uniformed officer discharged a department-issued firearm, striking him.

The suspect fled on foot before being shot and remains in life-threatening condition. His identity has not been released.

During the incident, nine adults sustained gunshot wounds, primarily to their extremities. All were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Video from the scene shows first responders tending to victims shortly after the shooting was reported.

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team has been activated to lead the criminal investigation. The county sheriff’s department is overseeing the officer-involved shooting probe.

The Tucson Police Department is conducting a separate, parallel investigation into possible policy violations. Findings will be forwarded to the county attorney’s office for review.

Tucson’s mayor called the event a serious and senseless act of gun violence, praising first responders for stabilizing the victims.

The mayor also cited easy access to firearms and state gun laws as contributing factors, urging expanded background checks and violence prevention funding.

Street closures remain in effect in downtown Tucson as the investigation continues.
