He branded South Korea its “most hostile enemy,” dismissing Seoul’s recent attempts at reconciliation as a deceptive facade. Kim asserted North Korea retains the right to “initiate arbitrary action” in response to perceived provocations, painting a picture of a nation poised for conflict.
The North Korean leader went further, suggesting the complete collapse of South Korea wasn’t beyond the realm of possibility. This aggressive rhetoric underscored a hardening stance, abandoning any pretense of goodwill and signaling a return to a policy of maximum pressure.
Central to Kim’s address was a sweeping five-year plan focused on dramatically expanding North Korea’s nuclear arsenal. Intelligence estimates suggest the nation already possesses around 50 warheads, with the capacity to build dozens more, solidifying its position as a nuclear power.
Kim proclaimed North Korea’s “international status has risen extraordinarily,” and vowed to further strengthen its nuclear capabilities. The ambition isn’t simply maintaining the current arsenal, but actively increasing both the quantity and operational effectiveness of its nuclear weapons.
