A scene of unimaginable horror unfolded in Thailand Wednesday, as a construction crane catastrophically collapsed onto a passenger train, claiming the lives of at least 22 people and injuring 64 more.
The tragedy occurred in Nakhon Ratchasima province, as the train journeyed from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani. The impact of the falling crane was devastating, instantly derailing the train and igniting a fierce fire that quickly engulfed several carriages.
Initial reports indicate nearly 200 passengers were onboard when the unthinkable happened. Emergency responders immediately rushed to the scene, battling the blaze and beginning the harrowing task of searching for survivors amidst the wreckage.
The situation remained incredibly precarious as the unstable crane threatened further collapse, forcing rescue teams to temporarily halt their efforts. Authorities feared additional movement could endanger those still working to extract victims trapped within the mangled train cars.
Police Colonel Thatchapon Chinnawong reported that the heaviest casualties were concentrated in the two carriages directly impacted by the crane. The grim task of recovering bodies continues, with the full extent of the devastation still becoming clear.
The Transport Minister has confirmed a full investigation is underway to determine the cause of this horrific accident and to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. The nation mourns as recovery efforts continue.
