A chilling exchange captured on TikTok has led to the reassignment of a Portland police officer. The video surfaced amidst nationwide protests following the death of Renee Nicole Good, a woman shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis.
The recording, reportedly taken during a demonstration outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility, features a demonstrator directly questioning the officer about Renee Nicole Good. His response, stark and unsettling, was audible: “If she drove a car on me, yes,” he stated, referencing a potential use of force.
The confrontation quickly escalated as protesters accused the officer and the Portland Police Bureau of prioritizing paychecks over public safety. One agitator screamed, “People are being shot in the street, and you’re talking about your paycheck!”
The officer’s reply, “I do like my paycheck,” ignited further outrage. He then attempted to frame the situation, stating, “Sometimes criminals get shot if they threaten the cops,” and clarifying, “When they are breaking the law, when they endanger a cop.”
The video shows the officer wearing a clearly visible Portland Police Bureau badge. The exchange was punctuated by shouts of “Racist!” and increasingly hostile language directed at the officer.
Portland Police Chief Robert Day acknowledged the circulating video and confirmed an internal review is underway. As a result, the officer has been temporarily reassigned to other duties.
Chief Day emphasized the heightened tensions surrounding the incident and the importance of maintaining community trust. He stated the bureau aims to uphold professional standards and facilitate safe, lawful protest activity.
Portland’s Mayor expressed confidence in Chief Day’s handling of the situation, highlighting the city’s commitment to transparent and accountable policing. He also connected Good’s death to concerns about federal overreach and the need for local law enforcement to support the community.
The mayor described the community as “shocked and grieving,” framing Good’s death as a tragic consequence of escalating federal actions. He affirmed that Portlanders standing up to the federal government deserve to know their local leaders and police are allies.
