A Long Island family is desperately searching for their son, Thomas Medlin, who vanished after traveling to New York City to meet someone he connected with through the popular online game, Roblox.
On January 9th, Thomas left Stony Brook School and, according to police, hurried to the train station, boarding a train destined for Grand Central Terminal. He was last seen on security footage around 5:30 p.m. that same day, a fleeting image fueling a growing wave of anxiety.
His parents, Eva Yan and James Medlin, are heartbroken and bewildered. They describe Thomas’s disappearance as completely out of character, emphasizing he had always remained close to family. “He has never left our side,” his mother stated, her voice thick with worry.
Roblox, a platform boasting nearly 83 million daily active users, insists safety is paramount. A spokesperson stated the game offers parental controls, including the ability to disable in-chat communication, and employs filters to prevent the sharing of personal information.
However, the case shines a harsh light on the potential dangers lurking within online gaming communities. Families are increasingly voicing concerns about predators exploiting these platforms, particularly given that 42% of Roblox’s player base is under the age of 13.
One chilling account involved a 13-year-old girl who was lured from Roblox to the messaging platform Discord by a stranger offering in-game credits. The interaction quickly escalated, resulting in requests for sexually explicit photos and ultimately, a report to the FBI.
The concerns are so significant that the Texas Attorney General recently filed a lawsuit against Roblox, alleging the company knowingly disregards online safety laws. Texas joined Kentucky and Louisiana in taking legal action, accusing the gaming giant of prioritizing profits over the well-being of its young users.
Meanwhile, search parties comprised of family and friends are tirelessly combing both Long Island and New York City, clinging to hope. “Everyone loves him,” Yan shared, a simple statement echoing the profound loss felt by all who know Thomas.
The investigation remains ongoing, a desperate race against time to bring Thomas home and to understand the circumstances surrounding his disappearance, a stark reminder of the hidden risks within the digital world.
