BRITAIN JUST TAXED YOUR TRAVEL: 25% Price Hike Incoming!

A journey to the United Kingdom is about to require a crucial, often overlooked step. For over a year, the Electronic Travel Authorisation – or ETA – has been a formal requirement, but a period of grace has shielded travelers from strict enforcement. That leniency ends February 25th, and without an ETA, entry into the U.K. will be denied.

The urgency doesn’t stop there. The cost of obtaining an ETA is poised to increase from its current 16 British pounds (approximately $22) to 20 British pounds (around $27). While a specific date for this price hike hasn’t been announced, the window to secure an ETA at the lower rate is rapidly closing.

Consider this: an approved ETA remains valid for two years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Frequent visitors to the U.K. will find this a particularly valuable investment, covering multiple trips with a single application. Even without immediate travel plans, securing an ETA now offers a hedge against future price increases and ensures readiness for spontaneous adventures.

What exactly *is* an ETA? It’s essentially a digital visa waiver, granting permission for visitors to enter the U.K. for stays of up to six months without requiring a traditional visa. This applies to travelers of all ages. It functions similarly to the ESTA required for travel to the United States.

As of February 25th, attempting to travel to the U.K. without a valid ETA will result in being denied boarding of your flight, ferry, or train. Border officials will enforce this rule rigorously. However, passengers simply transiting through the U.K. – those who don’t pass through U.K. passport control during a connection – are exempt.

The application process is entirely online and requires a digital photograph. Allow up to three business days for processing and approval. While applications can be submitted through third-party websites, be aware that these often include additional service fees on top of the official government charge.

British and Irish citizens are exempt from the ETA requirement. If your initial application is rejected due to errors, you are permitted to reapply. However, a formal refusal of your application carries no appeal process, meaning a visa will be necessary for entry.

If the United Kingdom – encompassing England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland – features on your travel horizon for 2026, or any time soon, prioritize applying for your ETA now. Don’t risk being turned away at the border or paying a higher fee later. Proactive planning is the key to a seamless journey.
